HGTC Building 400 ExpansionHorry-Georgetown Technical CollegeCompletion Date Project Budget One of the original structures on the Conway campus of Horry Georgetown Technical College, Building 400 is a one story, non-descript building at a prime location within the heart of the campus. This study explores the feasibility of providing substantial additions and significant renovations to greatly increase the size and utility of the existing structure. It also addresses the needs of a program titled “Early College”, a new initiative intended to provide high school students early entry into technical college curriculum while earning credits in both high school and college. An independent structure for a second and third story addition spans the existing building, solving phasing and structural challenges posed by the existing building, and more than triples the square footage of the existing building. The external columns for the new structure provide additional depth to the faces of the building creating a new overall image. Generous daylighting is provided throughout the interior, and the latest technology tools are planned for each classroom. The conceptual design features lightweight vertical circulation and a transparent porch feature derived from the existing circulation arrangement. The design solution addresses all the major project objectives by providing ample, flexible square footage, an enhanced overall character, sustainable design synergies, and a new technology driven image on the northern edge of campus. |
