This 650 car garage located in Columbia’s Vista has a character strongly influenced by turn-of-the-century industrial warehouses found prominently in the District. A modern precast concrete structural system is made contextual by featuring brick inserts cast into panels with proportions that mimic the traditional warehouse massing and scale. Special brick detailing and patterning reinterpret traditional masonry details found on surrounding historical structures. The stair and elevator towers are unique “sculptural” elements featured at the prominent pedestrian corners along Lincoln Street, their non-traditional form contrasting with the typical orthogonal bay. The garage occupies the majority of the block, but is strategically set back from Lady Street to create a parcel for future mixed-use development. Quackenbush Architects + Planners is Design Architect on the project, with the LPA Group serving as Architect of Record.
