Quackenbush Architects is providing design services for the renovation and addition to this existing 68,000 square foot elementary school for the Rock Hill School District. The scope—which consolidates many urgent upgrades into one strategic addition while minimizing impacts to the rest of the school—addresses the building’s main entrance, cafeteria, and administrative suites, and includes a new fire protection system, upgraded HVAC system, and modification of vehicular circulation and student drop-off on site.
Q+ worked with staff and district leaders to discuss needs and establish priorities, which included expanding the cafeteria capacity and providing an extra serving line as well as a staging area for performances. The new administration and reception area included a “refresh” of the entryway to the school, enhancing the cosmetic appearance of the building while also providing improvements to the safety of pedestrian traffic. Future renovations and additions were also master planned, including renovated courtyard spaces to be used as outdoor classrooms, enclosing connectors between PE, Art, and Music, and providing a shaded canopy above the outdoor amphitheater. The building was also evaluated in terms of code and accessibility, resulting in the addition of a new elevator and restroom renovations.
