LEED Gold

This new 68,000 square foot facility,  located in the heart of the University of South Carolina campus, works alongside the current Thompson Student Health Center as home to the University’s Student Health Services. The building, which has high benchmarks for sustainability, creates a “campus center around wellness”, promoting healthy living and setting the bar for student health centers nationwide. The building contains clinical and laboratory areas for a range of health services, as well as facilities for counseling, wellness and education, a retail pharmacy, and a number of public amenities to draw students into the building. The design is a collaboration between Quackenbush Architects + Planners and Perkins + Will.

The center accommodates a robust complement of medical, mental health, advocacy, and preventive and wellness services. Clinics for general medicine, women’s care, sports medicine/orthopedics, and allergy, immunization and travel are included, along with support spaces such as radiography and consulting offices for nutrition, counseling, wellness and psychiatric services, and a retail pharmacy. Services for mental health are conveniently located in the adjacent, repurposed building, which operates in conjunction with the new building. Students come to the center not only to be treated for an illness, but also to learn about nutrition, sexual health, stress management, and other aspects of wellness pertinent to modern-day life on a college campus.
