Johns Island Elementary School

This new elementary school for Charleston County Schools will be located on Johns Island. The 84,000 sq. ft. program for grades 2–5 accommodates 600 students initially but will include core spaces that allows expansion of up to 900 students with an additional classroom wing. The site includes many significant live oak trees and wetlands that will be protected and treated as amenities in the design, with safe and secure outdoor learning spaces organizing the two-story plan. The architecture is influenced by regional features on the Island, including indigenous building forms and materials.
