Piney Woods Elementary School - Construction

The 105,000 square foot school will serve 750 students. An interactive programming process which included administrators, teachers, parents, board members and community members kicked-off the design of the school. Through this process a number of goals and values to guide the design were identified, including empowering students, providing opportunities for development of problem-solving skills, maximizing resources, maintaining a safe and nurturing environment for all students, and supporting the changing way students are educated in order to succeed in today’s fast-paced, technologically-driven society.


The 2-story structure is organized around a central, secure courtyard connecting to the Media Center and Related Arts classrooms. The building is zoned for functionality and security with grade levels on the east side of a central lobby and administration area, and community spaces such as gymnasium and cafeteria to the west. Generous windows provide daylighting and views to the interior of the building, promoting health and well-being for the students and staff inside.


Horry County Schools - SOAR Academy - Construction

The new SOAR Academy for Horry County Schools in Conway is a 50,000 square foot alternative school for high school and middle school students. The building’s design features two distinct wings for the two age groups, linked by common spaces and the school administration in the front. The “SOAR” experience is celebrated in a multi-purpose room adjacent to the main entry. The room is distinguished by a high sloping roof and an accent brick feature wall that serves as a back-drop to an elevated platform for presentations.  The “SOAR” Room also serves double duty as the dining room. A shared fitness room and group collaboration spaces are centrally located to serve both population groups. The middle and high school classroom wings enclose the activity courtyard at the center of the campus. The building is sited on a greenfield site located near the district office allowing for future facilities and synergies.


The SOAR Academy houses a middle school wing and a high school wing connected by a main corridor with access to common spaces. The layout of the school was designed to control the flow of students so that middle and high school populations remain separate. Security was also paramount in the design of the school with 3 secure vestibules; one for the middle school, one for high school, and one for visitors to enter the main front entrance. The dining room was designed as an aspirational space where the weekly Soaring Graduation Ceremony takes place and is the focal point of the design.


James Island Charter High School CTE & Gym Additions - Construction

Two new strategic additions located at the perimeter of James Island Charter High School’s campus will provide much needed additional education and athletic space and provide a modern update to the school’s architectural character. The new career technology education wing and competition gym strengthen existing circulation paths and maintain significant green spaces while creating enhanced outdoor social space on campus. The 30,000 SF Career Technology Education addition will house classrooms and labs for programs including construction, engineering, health science, and computer technology. Spaces are designed to be flexible and agile, accommodating current needs while anticipating future programs as community needs change over time. The addition’s exterior expression references the architecture of the existing school but incorporates a mix of brick, metal panel, and glass to create a composition that is both contemporary and contextual.

A second 30,000 SF addition will house the school’s competition gym including home and visitor locker rooms, a sports medicine room, weight room, and seating for 1500 spectators. School graphics and branding will be incorporated throughout the interior and exterior to establish a strong home team identity. At the corner between the two new additions, a new entry plaza directs guests into the gym and creates a connection to the existing athletic campus directly across the street. 


EL Wright Middle School & Center for Knowledge - Construction

This new, modern complex is located on the original site of the aged E.L. Wright Middle School and Center for Knowledge. Despite the challenges of building on an occupied site, the 231,563 square foot design creates a more unified and compact campus, incorporating 21st century learning characteristics and a significant increase in quality green space. The building is comprised of three 3-story academic wings linked by a main circulation spine connecting the academic wings to the arts, gymnasium, library, dining, and administrative spaces. The massing of the academic wings is a collection of simple, “slipping bars” that break down the larger scale of the school. Secure outdoor courtyards and organic playscapes are created by the spaces between each of the academic wings, offering opportunities for outdoor learning. The Center for Knowledge (CFK) anchors the southern end of the building. It is distinguished from the middle school as serving elementary aged children through the use of bold color and large, picture windows in each classroom. The project is designed in collaboration with Perkins + Will K-12 studio.


Central Carolina Technical College Greenspace Projects - Contruction

Q+ has designed the next transformative project identified by the Central Carolina Technical College 2019 Master Plan: a new central campus greenspace that replaces parking and asphalt with new landscape, trees, and handsome paving materials. Seeking to add informal areas for students to gather and collaborate, the design will also continue to prioritize and enhance pedestrian connections and outdoor seating options.
